  Introduction to the Guide
The subject of compensation and benefits is always a topic of much debate, and motivated by many factors, especially right now as society in general questions the value of everything in a climate of rising costs and with huge pressures on living standards.
For Employers the debate is relative. Do you pay reasonably and fairly, worse, or better than your competitors? How do you really know?
Actual salary and remuneration packages in the FMCG market are a much discussed and frequently challenged subject, particularly as most published, market specific, salary information is based on survey averages and wide generic ranges; indicative values, measured by formulaic job descriptions, so often unrepresentative of the true outputs or responsibility of a given role.
More worryingly, and crucially, there are many surveys whose data is gathered from pools of random employees, leaving them to self-select their ‘perceived’ job description and level. For example; those who see themselves as a National Account Manager (NAM), could in fact be a National Account Executive (NAE) as perceived by employers based on experience and responsibilities. Hence current available surveys do not always reflect accurate real-time salaries for specific jobs.
The Simmance Partnership is a prominent authority in the FMCG executive recruitment industry, specialising in sales and commercial functions. Virtually every assignment we are briefed on and handle is pre-empted by the discussion as to the appropriate level of compensation required to attract talent. We have always confidently relied on a close appreciation of comparative employer salary packages, our breadth of knowledge and experience in the industry, yet we discovered there is no authoritative guide and true measure on the
subject.
By popular demand we committed ourselves to finding the answers and you now have in front of you a definitive Guide, uniquely created using real-time ‘actual’ salaries and benefits, paid to the multi levels of the FMCG sales function as defined by Employers. This Guide is the first of its kind in over 10 years.
New for 2018 will be salary by size and turnover amongst the companies who were invited to participate in sharing their data. We have illustrated, possibly for the first time in FMCG, gender diversity in pay scales, which will become reporting legislation on 6 April 2018.
